The Greek official Charilaos Mariolis, candidate for the presidency of World Boxing, has been officially removed from his position as president of the Hellenic Boxing Federation (HBF) following a final criminal conviction. According to information obtained by SportsIn, the decision was communicated by the Hellenic Boxing Coaches Association, which stated that the measure was taken in accordance with national sports law and ratified by the state authorities.

The dismissal was decided by the federation’s board of directors and validated by the General Secretariat of Sports of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, through a declaratory act confirming that it is retroactive to 2021, the year when Mariolis assumed the presidency after the federation elections.

Retroactive dismissal and final conviction

The official document, signed by the Deputy Head of the General Secretariat of Sports, establishes that the measure is based on a legal impediment set out in Sports Law No. 2725/1999, which disqualifies anyone with a final criminal conviction from holding office in a sports federation. The Secretariat itself has confirmed that it continues to investigate the case in order to determine any further actions.

Mariolis was convicted of forgery with use, a crime that automatically disqualifies him from performing executive functions within Greek sport. The Coaches Association has warned that any participation by him in international electoral processes could lead to “disciplinary and legal complications.”

A delicate context for World Boxing

The controversy arises less than a month before the World Boxing annual congress, scheduled for November 23 in Rome, where the new president will be elected. The organization, founded in 2023 to promote transparency and credibility in Olympic boxing, now faces its first major institutional test.

With current president Boris van der Vorst not seeking re-election, the leadership race appeared to be between Kazakh legend Gennadiy Golovkin and Mariolis himself. However, the revelations regarding the Greek official’s dismissal could shift the balance of power and raise questions about the federation’s internal consistency on matters of integrity.

So, can an official dismissed in his own country run for the presidency of an international federation that defines itself by ethics and transparency? In Greece, the disciplinary process remains open. The authorities have forwarded the case to the competent bodies, which must determine the corresponding sanctions under current legislation.

‘Olympic’ anticipation in Rome

With just weeks to go before the congress, the eyes of the boxing world — and those of the International Olympic Committee — are focused on the decision that World Boxing will make regarding Mariolis’s candidacy. Could someone convicted in their own country simultaneously represent one of the most traditional Olympic sports? According to SportsIn, the decision on his eligibility could be announced before the start of the congress, in an effort to avoid an institutional conflict that could overshadow the organization’s first elections.
