The Italian Navy’s contribution to the organisation and safe delivery of the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games was highlighted during a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the event.
Mehrez Boussayene, Vice-President and Acting President of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, and Secretary General Iakovos Filippousis met with Admiral Andrea Petroni, Commander of the Italian Navy’s Southern Maritime Command, and senior navy officers in Taranto.
Boussayene and Filippousis thanked the Italian Navy for its support and cooperation throughout the organisation of the Games, with particular recognition given to the work of the Comando Marittimo Sud.
The southern maritime command has played an important role in supporting the two cruise ships that have been converted into the “Mediterranean Villages”, providing accommodation for athletes and delegations during the Games.

The use of cruise ships as athlete accommodation is one of the defining features of Taranto 2026. The initiative has offered participants a distinctive experience while reflecting Taranto’s close relationship with the sea and its long maritime tradition.
The meeting also reaffirmed the cooperation between the ICMG, the Taranto 2026 Organising Committee and Italian authorities, with the partners continuing to work together to ensure the safe and successful conclusion of the Games.
The meeting ended with an exchange of commemorative gifts, underscoring the spirit of cooperation, friendship and solidarity that has characterised the Mediterranean Games in Taranto.
