The power of sports goes beyond competition; it is a transformative tool that unites communities and fosters fundamental values. The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) upholds respect as one of its core pillars—a principle that transcends borders and strengthens unity among people from diverse backgrounds. Lennert Swart, president of IFMA’s Athletes’ Commission and a native of South Africa, highlights how the Muaythai community promotes friendship and mutual respect among athletes, regardless of nationality.
Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), IFMA actively supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its focus on youth aims to promote peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding. As Swart points out, IFMA athletes are united under a spirit of cooperation, embodying these values in every encounter. A prime example of this commitment is Mariam Alsuwaidi, honorary vice president and youth representative from the United Arab Emirates, who leads initiatives to encourage youth participation in Muaythai.
STRENGTHENING YOUTH MUAYTHAI
IFMA’s commitment to youth is reflected in its events, designed to leave a lasting impact. According to Janice Lyn, IFMA’s sports director and former president of the Athletes’ Commission, every IFMA Youth Championship is not just a competition but a platform for young athletes to grow and learn. These events help them develop skills and values that extend beyond the ring.
In 2025, IFMA will organize two major youth events that reaffirm its dedication to future generations. In Bahrain, the Asian Youth Games—supervised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)—will showcase Muaythai on a grand scale, thanks to the vision of Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Additionally, the IFMA Youth World Championship will take place in Abu Dhabi, supported by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the UAE Muaythai Federation. Its president, His Excellency Abdullah Al Neyadi, emphasizes that investing in youth is crucial for the sport’s future, ensuring that the championship will not only offer competition but also conferences and workshops for the holistic development of young athletes.
