Last week, India officially expressed its interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a move that could solidify its position in the international sports arena. Led by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), this effort is seen as a crucial step toward an even greater goal: hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. The proposal has been submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), and if approved, India would host the Games for a second time, following the 2010 Delhi Games.

Despite the organizational challenges and corruption allegations that marked the 2010 Games, the event was considered a sporting success. IOA president PT Usha expressed optimism about the proposal and highlighted the support from the state government. The CGF has confirmed that the process is underway and will provide further details in the future. CGF Executive Director Katie Sadleir has also expressed her support for India’s bid, emphasizing the country’s potential to become one of the leading hosts of the Olympic Games.

BID AND PREPARATIONS

Ahmedabad has been selected as the proposed host city for the 2030 Games. The city has seen significant development in sports infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium and other projects like the Naranpura Sports Complex. These advancements are encouraging for the CGF, especially considering the recent difficulty in finding cities willing to host the Games.

The deadline for submitting bids is March 31. The opportunity to host the Commonwealth Games represents a decisive step for India in its path to becoming a global sports powerhouse. With its sights set on the 2036 Olympic Games, the country aims to demonstrate its organizational capabilities and passion for sports on the international stage.
