Italy, Austria and Slovenia are considering bidding jointly to hold the Winter Olympic Games after 2034, according to statements by the president of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region (northern Italy) Massimiliano Fedriga: “We have agreed to start a joint Friuli candidacy process -Venezia Giulia, Slovenia and Austria to host the Winter Olympic Games after 2034.”
Italy will hold the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina and the next 2030 Games will possibly take place in the French Alps in the absence of official confirmation, which will take place at the 142nd session of the IOC in Paris on 23 July 2024, on the eve of the 2024 Summer Olympics. After the 2030 Winter Games, the best-positioned city in the race to win the 2034 Winter Olympics is Salt Lake City (Utah, United States) , a city that already hosted them in 2002. Both games were provisionally approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in November 2023.
With this rotation and despite the fact that the Italian edition of Milan-Cortina is in 2026, the governments of northern Italy and the neighboring regions of Austria and Slovenia hope to be able to organize an unprecedented event: the Olympic Games co-organized by three countries. However, Switzerland could also be a serious rival for this 2038 option.
