The International World Games Association (IWGA) Executive Committee held its fourth meeting of the year in Madrid to meet one year ahead of the 2025 World Games to be held in Chengdu, China. Seven members of the IWGA Executive Committee met to discuss several important decisions for the future of the organisation and its events, including financial matters, rights distribution, the IWGA Athletes’ Committee, Chengdu 2025 and the World Games beyond.
The meeting underlined a strong commitment to innovation, global outreach to new audiences and dedication to the success of its members and athletes. The Madrid meeting reportedly devoted a significant amount of time to the One-Year-To-Go celebrations and preparations for TWG 2025, which is the most anticipated event on the IWGA calendar.
There was also a particular focus on expanding The World Games brand globally over the next year, which was linked to a review of the Athletes’ Committee election process and a focus on improving athlete participation and representation.
A key motion for breastfeeding athletes, tabled by IWGA Athletes’ Committee Chair Sandra Sanchez, was passed. Although still under development, the motion aims to support breastfeeding athletes by allowing them to bring their babies to the 2025 World Games and future events.
The IWGA cemented its commitment to innovation and its alignment with global trends with its ongoing collaboration with the LOC with the aim of introducing e-sports for the first time in the history of the World Games.
It has started a collaboration with the World eSports Federation and now three eGames could be presented at the Sports Plaza during the 2025 World Games after a proposal was submitted.
Other topics discussed included sponsorship activities with Shankai Sports, bidding procedures for the 2033 World Games and financial matters which reportedly ultimately indicated a stable performance, demonstrating the overall financial health of the IWGA.
