The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee has introduced the LA28 Volunteer Program, launched in partnership with Delta Air Lines. The initiative offers two main avenues for participation: community-based activities prior to the event and volunteer roles during the Games. The interest registration for the community phase is now open and will serve to engage residents ahead of the arrival of delegations and competitions.

The program foresees the gradual involvement of volunteers in initiatives connected to local communities and to the operational planning of the Games, with the goal of strengthening civic participation and community engagement around the Olympic and Paralympic Games. According to the Organizing Committee, volunteers will play a key role in venue operations and in welcoming athletes, visitors, and spectators.

Community participation prior to the games

The community phase will begin in fall 2025, allowing volunteers to collaborate on local projects alongside social organizations, municipal institutions, and program partners. Planned areas of activity include wildfire recovery, food assistance programs, and support for grassroots sports and communities with specific needs.

This approach is intended to form a core part of the LA28 legacy strategy. The initiative aims to integrate Games preparation into the daily life of the city in the years leading up to the event, encouraging long-term community involvement and social cohesion.

Volunteering during the LA28 Games

Applications for volunteering during the Games will open in summer 2026. Volunteers will take on roles guiding spectators, supporting delegations, and assisting with venue operations throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Eligibility requires being 18 years of age or older, with no prior experience necessary, though early involvement in the community phase will be considered positively.

Submitting an expression of interest at this stage does not guarantee a position during the Games, but it will ensure that applicants are informed about opportunities and timelines as planning progresses. The Organizing Committee plans to assemble teams representing a broad cross-section of the city.

Comparison with Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020

The Los Angeles 2028 volunteer model introduces a longer preparatory phase when compared to Paris 2024, whose program focused largely on the competition period and the months immediately preceding the event. While Paris implemented civic engagement activities, it did not formalize a multi-year community volunteering phase as part of its primary program structure.

In the case of Tokyo 2020, the volunteer system distinguished between City Cast and Field Cast, both directly linked to the Games period. LA28, by contrast, establishes a community participation phase beginning three years prior to the event, embedding social and local engagement within the broader development of the Games.
