Volleyball World has announced the appointment of Michael Payne, a recognized international sports marketing expert, as its new independent chairman. Payne has more than four decades of experience in the global sports industry and has been a key figure in the commercial transformation of the Olympic Movement.
Michael Payne was the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) first Director of Global Marketing and Broadcasting Rights. During his tenure, he led the creation of the Olympic Partner (TOP) global sponsorship program, which marked a turning point in the marketing of the Olympic Games. Following his time at the IOC, he founded Payne Sports Media Strategies, where he has advised renowned sports organizations such as Formula 1, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and CVC Capital Partners.
Fernando Lima to continue on Volleyball World Board
Fernando Lima, who has been founding president of Volleyball World since its inception in 2021, will continue to serve on the organization’s Board. In addition, he will assume a new leadership role within the FIVB, heading a project that will be announced shortly. During the transition period, Lima will act as an advisor to ensure a smooth transition in the presidency.
Under Lima, Volleyball World has embraced a fan-centric vision, achieving significant growth in live events, digital platforms and commercial rights. It has also redefined the way volleyball is presented, combining elite competitions with immersive fan experiences, connecting with audiences on every continent.

Fernando Lima expressed his enthusiasm for the future of volleyball and highlighted the progress made during his tenure. He said, “I am extremely proud of the period I served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, and I am confident that with Michael at the helm, we will further accelerate our growth.
For his part, Michael Payne highlighted the progress made by Volleyball World in recent years and expressed his commitment to the global growth of the sport. “It is particularly exciting to be joining at such a promising time, with a summer full of volleyball, including the Volleyball Nations League and the World Championships,” Payne said.
