Muaythai continues to consolidate its place on the European multi-sport stage. The discipline has been confirmed as part of the program for the European Games Istanbul 2027, reaffirming its growth and international projection after a debut that did not go unnoticed. More than a combat sport, its inclusion also represents the recognition of a practice deeply rooted in tradition and cultural identity.

The decision comes after the impact generated at the European Games Kraków-Małopolska 2023, where Muaythai established itself as one of the most complete disciplines in the program, combining high competitive level with a performance that integrated unique cultural elements. This balance has been key to its continuity in an event that serves as a showcase for European sport within the Olympic Movement.

From a promising debut to consolidation in the European program

Muaythai’s presence in Kraków 2023 left a mark that went beyond sporting results. Athletes, coaches, and organizers highlighted the technical quality of the bouts, as well as the discipline’s ability to adapt to a demanding multi-sport environment. The presence of traditional rituals and cultural expressions added a different dimension, creating a deeper connection with the audience and setting it apart from other combat sports.

This experience strengthened the confidence of organizations such as the European Olympic Committees, which see Muaythai as a discipline aligned with Olympic values and supported by a solid organizational structure. The joint work with entities such as the IFMA has been key to ensuring quality standards and a sustainable projection within the international calendar.

Istanbul 2027: sport, culture and international projection

Looking ahead to Istanbul 2027, Muaythai will not only return but will aim to deepen its identity. The program will include both elite competition and traditional expressions such as Wai Kru and Mai Muay, elements that are essential to its essence and reinforce its cultural character. This duality between sport and tradition has become one of its main attributes within the European Games.

The growth of Muaythai in Turkey also plays a key role in this new phase. Under the leadership of Hasan Yıldız, the local federation has driven the development of the sport and its integration into the country’s sporting ecosystem. In coordination with the Turkish National Olympic Committee and the local organizing committee, preparations are underway with the aim of delivering an experience that combines competitive excellence and cultural richness in one of the most important stages of European sport.
