Olegario Vázquez Raña, Honorary Member of the IOC and Outstanding Sports Figure, Passes Away

The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) deeply regrets the passing of Olegario Vázquez Raña, Honorary Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), who died at the age of 89.

Vázquez Raña dedicated his life to sport, first as an athlete and later as an outstanding sports administrator. Since 1969, he was a Permanent Member of the Mexican Olympic Committee, playing a key role in the development of sport in his country.

AN OLYMPIC CAREER AS AN ATHLETE AND ADMINISTRATOR

As an athlete, Vázquez Raña represented Mexico in shooting in four editions of the Olympic Games: Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976. His experience as a competitor allowed him to understand the needs of athletes and transfer that knowledge to his administrative work.

In 1995, he became a Member of the IOC, a position he held until 2015, when he became an Honorary Member in 2016. His legacy in the Olympic movement is widely recognized internationally.

LEADERSHIP IN INTERNATIONAL SHOOTING FEDERATION

One of Vázquez Raña’s greatest achievements was his leadership of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), where he served as president for nearly 40 years, from 1980 to 2018. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to modernize and promote shooting sports globally.

His vision and commitment to the sport left an indelible mark on the ISSF, cementing it as one of the most respected federations in the Olympic arena.

The passing of Olegario Vázquez Raña represents a great loss for international sport. ANOC expressed its condolences to Vázquez Raña’s family and friends, highlighting his invaluable contribution to sport and his dedication throughout his life.
