The Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020, Richard Carapaz, will not be able to defend his medal in Paris 2024. This was confirmed this Monday the 27th by the Ecuadorian Cycling Federation (FEC) after giving up Ecuador’s only place in road cycling to Jhonatan Narváez, decision that was not free of controversy.
A few weeks ago and after comments made by Richard, the Ministry of Sports of Ecuador asked the FEC to delay the selection date to review its criteria, a request that was not taken into account by the Federation, the which stated that the representative was appointed “as requested by the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE), on the basis of federative autonomy and the regulations issued.”
The Ecuadorian cycling legend, Richard Carapaz, was quick to speak out after his partner’s confirmation for the road and individual time trial events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, “I want to wish Jhonatan the best of luck, may he do well.” and represents us in the best way.”
The FEC sent a letter to the International Cycling Union to request an extra place for Ecuador and to be able to count on the current Olympic champion, a message that has not had a response from the international entity so there could still be a minimum hope of being able to count with Carapaz.
