Pete de Wet, CEO of Triathlon New Zealand (Tri NZ), has been elected as the new President of Oceania Triathlon, marking a milestone in his career as he also joins the Executive Board of World Triathlon. De Wet replaces Australia’s Michelle Cooper in this role, taking on the challenge of continuing to strengthen the growth of triathlon in the region.

The election took place during the Oceania Congress, held virtually last Saturday, and stands out for the inclusion of new leadership in a renewed five-member board. This transition reinforces Oceania Triathlon’s commitment to a collaborative and inclusive vision, representing various nations in the Pacific region.

A DIVERSE AND DEDICATED BOARD

The new executive board, led by Pete de Wet, includes key figures from Oceania who bring experience and dedication to the growth of triathlon in the region. Among the members are Lani Wendt Young (Samoa), Vice President; Natalie Smith, Chair of Tri NZ; Tim Harradine (Australia), CEO of AusTriathlon; and Manami Iijima (Guam), Athlete Representative and the first triathlete from her country to qualify for the Olympic Games. Following his election, De Wet expressed his gratitude, highlighting the value of teamwork in promoting the sport throughout Oceania.

This leadership change represents a new phase for Oceania Triathlon, focusing on strengthening regional collaboration and developing triathlon in South Pacific island nations. Antonio F. Arimany, President-Elect of World Triathlon, highlighted the importance of figures like Iijima and expressed his enthusiasm for working with the new board to continue promoting triathlon in the region. The diversity of its members reflects a commitment to inclusion and the advancement of the sport across all nations in Oceania.
