The countdown to the fourth Mediterranean Beach Games has officially begun, with one year remaining until Portimão and Lagoa host the event in Portugal.
A special ceremony at the historic Santa Catarina Fortress in Portimão marked the one-year countdown to the Opening Ceremony. International Committee of Mediterranean Games President Francesco Purromuto and Secretary General Iakovos Filippousis presented the first official invitations for the 2027 Games.
The invitations were received by Fernando Gomes, President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee and President of the Games Organising Committee; Pedro Farromba, Executive Director of the Portimão-Lagoa 2027 Organising Committee; Portimão Mayor Álvaro Bila; Lagoa Mayor Luís Encarnação; and Portuguese Olympic Committee Secretary General Diana Gomes.
The ceremony formally marked the beginning of the final preparations for the Games. The event will be the first Mediterranean Games family event to be hosted in Portugal, which is the newest member of the ICMG.
The traditional protocol
Under the traditional protocol, official invitations are sent to all National Olympic Committees that are members of the ICMG, the International Olympic Committee and its members in Mediterranean countries, the International Sports Federations whose sports are included in the official programme, as well as prominent figures from the Olympic and Mediterranean sports community.
With the countdown now underway, Portimão and Lagoa have entered the final stage of preparations for an event that will bring young people and sporting communities from across the Mediterranean together through sport.
The fourth Mediterranean Beach Games will be held in Portimão and Lagoa from 18 to 25 September 2027, with 26 National Olympic Committees and 1,000 athletes expected to compete across 13 sports.
