Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has been officially selected to host the 2027 Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), following a vote by IOC members during the 144th Session held in Greece. This will be the first time that the Dominican Republic will host this meeting of IOC members and marks the return of the Olympic Movement to the Caribbean 38 years after the 95th IOC Session in Puerto Rico in 1989.
The Dominican Olympic Committee, led by its president, Garibaldy Bautista, earlier expressed great pride and enthusiasm for the opportunity to host the IOC Session. During the presentation of the bid, led by IOC member for the Dominican Republic, Luis Mejia Oviedo, the cultural richness and Caribbean flavor was highlighted, leaving a vibrant impression on the Session attendees.
The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, also addressed the IOC members through a video message: “On behalf of our entire country, it is an honor for us to have the opportunity to host the IOC Session in 2027 in Punta Cana, an event of great importance for the future of the Olympic Movement and the global development of sport”.
A BID BASED ON SUSTAINABILITY
The proposal to consider Punta Cana as a host city was initially presented by the IOC Executive Board in December 2024. This recommendation was based on a feasibility study conducted by the IOC Session Evaluation Commission, led by IOC Member Ser Miang Ng, in October 2024. The Commission was impressed by the exceptional quality of the world-class facilities, the clear focus on sustainability and the strong support of the local authorities. During the visit, the Commission was accompanied by Mejia Oviedo and Bautista.
Commission Chairman Ser Miang Ng noted: “The IOC Session will be held in the country’s largest convention center. The local authorities have shown great interest in the IOC Session and are ready to collaborate. Hosting the IOC Session in the Caribbean after 38 years will also highlight the universality and global reach of the Olympic Movement.”
A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY
The choice of Punta Cana as host underlines the IOC’s commitment to cultural and regional diversity, reflecting the universal appeal of the Olympic Movement. The Dominican Republic’s rich cultural heritage and passion for sport promise to contribute to a memorable and impactful IOC Session in 2027.
