In a ceremony filled with stars and global sports icons, the draw for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers was held in Doha, outlining the competitive landscape for 80 national teams. The event, held on May 13 at the stunning ALHAZM venue, marked the official launch of the “Road to Qatar”, which will culminate with 32 nations competing for the prestigious Naismith Trophy.
During the ceremony, legendary figures like Carmelo Anthony, FIBA’s Global Ambassador, and British long-distance runner Sir Mo Farah brought extra shine to a day full of emotion. Also in attendance were Olympic medalist Mutaz Essa Barshim, regional basketball icon Yassin Mousa, and German star Dirk Nowitzki, who took the stage with the trophy that his country will defend after becoming champion in 2023.
A Historic Draw Featuring World-Class Figures
The draw set the initial matchups on the road to the biggest tournament in FIBA history, with six qualifying windows to be played between November 2025 and March 2027. Throughout this period, 420 games will take place around the world, offering fans a unique chance to follow the progress of their favorite teams in pursuit of glory.
The event was attended by FIBA President Saud Ali Al Thani and Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, along with Central Board members and over 60 representatives from national federations. Also present were Local Organizing Committee General Director Mohammed Al-Meghaiseeb and officials from the Qatar Basketball Federation, reinforcing the host country’s commitment to the growth of global basketball.
