Lithuanian athlete Mykolas Alekna made history on Sunday by setting a new world record in the discus throw at the same venue where, exactly one year earlier, he had set his previous mark. The Olympic silver medalist reached a distance of 75.56 meters in the fourth round of the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona.
All-time record in discus throw
Alekna, 22, started the competition strong, surpassing her previous record of 74.89 meters on her first attempt. After two null throws, the young athlete unleashed a monumental throw that made him the first man in history to surpass 75 meters in discus throwing.
The previous world record of 74.35 meters, also achieved by Alekna a year ago, had surpassed the mark of 74.08 meters set by Germany’s Jurgen Schult in 1986. This new achievement consolidates Alekna as one of the most outstanding figures in the history of athletics.
Matthew Denny on the prowl
Alekna’s record was under threat days earlier, when Australia’s Matthew Denny recorded a throw of 74.25 meters, the second longest in discus history, setting an Oceania record. However, Denny, an Olympic bronze medalist, placed second in Sunday’s competition with a best attempt of 74.78 meters, which also beat Alekna’s previous mark.
Denny’s performance underlines the high standard in discus throwing, with both athletes pushing the limits of what is possible in this discipline.
