Pamplona will be the capital of Basque Pelota in a few weeks’ time. Spain is the country that has hosted the U22 World Championship of Basque Pelota the most times. This world championship has been held since 1984 and after Arnedo, Soria, Valdepeñas, Barcelona, Palencia, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Íscar and Valleado, Pamplona is ready to host the Basque Pelota World Championship.
This world championship is a showcase for the young talents of the sport. An atmosphere that will be used to celebrate the successes of the pelotaris who aspire to reach the top of the list in a few years’ time.
Pamplona-Iruña, and especially the prestigious Labrit pelota court, will capitalise for a few days on the universality of Basque pelota, its values and the spirit of an indigenous sport. An experience of international stature that will be innovative and accessible to everyone.
The other historic venues are Montevideo, which hosted the first world championship in 1984, and two years later, Paris-Biarritz-Anglet was the chosen city. It took four years for Havana to host the next one. Buenos Aires and Saint Denis had the honour of hosting the championships in 1996 and 2000. Four years later, Soria was the first Spanish city to host the championship. After Soria, Rosario in Argentina, Tarbes and Biarritz in France and íscar-Vallelado in Spain and Pamplona to finish.
