SportAccord faces back-to-back cancellations and raises questions about its stability as the sport’s leading global forum

The cancellation of SportAccord 2026 in Baku invites a reflection that goes beyond a single decision. It is not common for an event of this scale to miss two consecutive editions, and that inevitably raises questions about the solidity of the project in an increasingly complex international context.

In 2025, there was a clear explanation. The organisation itself linked the decision to the political situation in Istanbul following the removal of mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, a scenario that prevented certain key conditions from being met. In 2026, however, the message has been more open. The official line refers to ensuring the best possible experience, while external reports point to geopolitical factors in the region.

Venue selection under scrutiny

Without pointing directly, the coincidence of both cases naturally shifts attention towards one aspect: venue selection. In a global environment shaped by uncertainty, anticipating risks becomes more important than ever, especially for a convention that aims to bring together a large part of the international sports ecosystem.

Perhaps it is not so much about wrong decisions as it is about rapidly evolving scenarios. But when that evolution ends up affecting the event in consecutive years, it is reasonable for a sense to emerge that the margin for anticipation could be greater.

An image that relies on stability

SportAccord holds a unique position within the sports landscape. It is, at its core, a meeting point for federations, organisations and key stakeholders within the Olympic movement. For that reason, any disruption has an impact that goes beyond the event itself.

More than a one-off issue, what remains is a certain perception of instability. Not necessarily due to a lack of effort or commitment, but rather the difficulty of maintaining the event within the calendar in a demanding context. And in an environment where continuity and trust are essential, that nuance does not go unnoticed.

The focus now shifts to what comes next. Maintaining the host city, redefining the dates and restoring normality will be key to reinforcing that image. Because ultimately, the question is not only what has happened, but how SportAccord consolidates its place within the international calendar moving forward.
