Stephan Fox, Secretary General of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, has highlighted the progress of Muaythai in Senegal and the country’s commitment to developing sport and opportunities for young people.

Fox, who is also President of United Through Sports, addressed participants at a major Muaythai promotion event held at the Olympic Club in Dakar. He praised Senegal’s efforts to develop the sport, particularly as the country prepares to host the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games from 31 October to 13 November.

He stressed the importance of creating opportunities for young people through sport and recognised efforts to establish a sustainable pathway for Senegalese athletes, from grassroots participation to international competition.

The event was organised by the Royal Thai Embassy in Dakar in collaboration with the National Muay Thai Association of Senegal, with support from IFMA and the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Senegal. It brought together young people, school and university students, athletes, coaches, sports officials, diplomats, members of the public and media representatives.

H.E. Ms. Nipa Nirannoot, Ambassador-Designate of Thailand to Senegal, presided over the opening ceremony. She highlighted the importance of promoting Muaythai among Senegalese youth and described the sport as an expression of Thai culture and values, promoting discipline, respect, gratitude, friendship and solidarity.

The Ambassador also thanked the Government of Senegal, national and local authorities, sports organisations and partners for their support. She reaffirmed the Royal Thai Embassy’s commitment to the continued development of Muaythai in Senegal and to promoting Thailand’s national sport as a bridge of friendship between Thailand and Senegal and across West Africa.

Mr. Diamil Faye, Special Adviser to the President of Senegal on Sports, also thanked the Royal Thai Embassy and Thailand for their support in promoting sport in Senegal, particularly Muaythai. Papa Abdou Karim Diop Jr., President of the Senegalese Muay Thai Association, welcomed the strong presence of government officials, diplomats, international sports leaders and partners.

The programme included demonstrations of the 15 Mae Mai Muaythai techniques by Senegalese athletes, a traditional Wai Kru demonstration by Senegalese youth, three bouts of the Muaythai Ambassador’s Cup and 21 bouts in the National School and University Muaythai Championship.

The school championship formed part of the qualification pathway for young Senegalese athletes seeking to participate in international school-level Muaythai competitions expected to take place in Thailand next year. The event also provided an opportunity for Senegalese youth and foreign residents to experience the techniques, traditions and values of Muaythai under international-level guidance.
