The International Surfing Association (ISA) held its 2024 Annual General Assembly marking a milestone in the governance and expansion of surfing globally. During the virtual event, new leaders were elected, key reforms were approved and surfing’s Olympic achievements in Paris 2024 were highlighted.

Among the main topics on the agenda was the election of Sally Fitzgibbons (Australia) and Karin Sierralta (Peru) as new ISA Vice Presidents. In addition, Kimifumi Imoto (Japan) was re-elected as a regular member of the Executive Committee. These additions reinforce the federation’s international leadership at a crucial time for the growth of the sport.

NEW MEMBERS

Sally Fitzgibbons, four-time ISA World Surfing Games gold medalist and Tokyo 2020 Olympian, replaces Kirsty Coventry, who was named a Life Member and Emeritus Member for her outstanding career with the ISA. Karin Sierralta, President of the Pan American Surfing Association, will continue to promote the development of surfing in the Americas.

The Assembly also approved the incorporation of the British Virgin Islands as the 117th member of the ISA. This development underscores the goal of expanding surfing to new territories and fostering its growth in emerging communities.

REFORMS AND OLYMPIC OBJECTIVES

During the General Assembly, important amendments to the ISA Constitution were approved, including a commitment to human rights and diversity as guiding principles. It was also announced that national federations must be supported by a National Olympic Committee recognized by the IOC, ensuring alignment with the Olympic Movement.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre presented a report on surfing’s successful participation in Paris 2024, where the waves at Teahupo’o provided an unforgettable spectacle. He also shared updates related to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and preparations for Brisbane 2032, ensuring surfing’s presence on the Olympic stage for the long term.

THOMAS BACH’S MESSAGE

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach sent a video message congratulating the ISA on surfing’s success at Paris 2024 and highlighting its role in modernizing the sport. “Under the great leadership of Fernando Aguerre, they continue to surf the waves of progress, modernize their federation and develop their sport. They can always count on the IOC as a partner to promote our shared Olympic values,” said Bach.

The ISA AGM 2024 not only celebrates a year of great achievements, but sets a solid course for the future of surfing, looking forward to LA28 and beyond, consolidating its place as a key discipline in the Olympic Movement.
