FIBA is set to close the 2024 3×3 World Tour season with a world-class event in Hong Kong. The tournament finals take place at the iconic Victoria Park from 22-24 November, bringing together the world’s top 14 teams in a competition where US$230,000 in prize money will be up for grabs.
Alex Sanchez, FIBA 3×3 Managing Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the choice of Hong Kong as the venue: “We know we have a world-class host that will provide all the ingredients for an epic finale that the players deserve. The beauty of 3×3 basketball is that any federation can excel on a national level.”
A UNIQUE EVENT WITH AN ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE
This will be the first time Hong Kong has hosted the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Final, and a vibrant atmosphere is expected. “We know we can count on the fans, who will create the electric atmosphere that 3×3 basketball is known for. This accessibility, along with the urban culture of the sport, will continue to attract new young stars, especially in China,” said Sanchez.
The global impact of 3×3 basketball has grown exponentially. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, the competition sold out the 4,000-capacity Place de la Concorde venue daily, as thousands of fans gathered nearby.
THE UNSTOPPABLE GROWTH OF 3X3 BASKETBALL
The figures show the success of 3×3 in 2024. According to FIBA data, 3×3 basketball reached more than eight million followers on social media, compared to 2.6 million in 2021. During the Paris Olympics, it generated 132 million views and 195 million impressions on its digital channels, an increase of 613% compared to Tokyo 2020.
“2024 has been a pivotal year. The combination of the Paris Olympics and another incredible World Tour season has been the perfect recipe for the continued growth of 3×3 basketball,” said Sanchez.
CHINA AND ITS KEY ROLE IN 3X3 DEVELOPMENT
China has emerged as one of the key countries in the development of 3×3, with six of this year’s 17 World Tour stops being held on its soil. This effort culminates with the World Tour Finals in Hong Kong, marking a spectacular close to a record-breaking season.
“The evolution of our sport is unprecedented,” concluded Sanchez. “Our focus will continue to be on expanding the global reach of 3×3 basketball and ensuring its sustained growth as we head towards Los Angeles 2028.”
