The president of the Association of Caribbean National Olympic Committees (CANOC), Keith Joseph, expressed his satisfaction with the commitment of the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands to make sports a key pillar of its national development strategy. During a meeting on October 15 at the Ministry of Education headquarters, Joseph highlighted the importance of government support for the growth of sport in the region. The meeting was attended by key figures such as the Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Social Services, Rachel Taylor, and other local sports leaders.

CANOC Secretary General Brian Lewis and Second Vice President John Abramson Jr. also joined Joseph at the meeting. The meeting addressed key issues such as relations between national sports federations, selection policies and government support for the sport. In addition, the importance of physical education in schools and sports tourism as an economic driver were discussed.

GENDER AND SPORT AS A CENTRAL THEME

One of the highlights was the relevance of gender in sport, a topic of growing interest at the global level. The Minister and her team underlined the commitment to promote gender equality and the importance of sharing best practices with CANOC members. Sport is not only seen as an avenue for self-improvement, but also as a tool to address the challenges facing young people today.

The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands is implementing a number of initiatives to use sport as a means of holistic youth development. Through these actions, it seeks to build citizens committed to the well-being of the nation, using sport as a catalyst for positive change.

SPORTS TOURISM AS AN ECONOMIC PILLAR

During the meeting, the government also showed great interest in developing a solid sports tourism policy. The idea is to take advantage of the country’s geographical advantages, such as its natural beauty and its proximity to other nations in the Caribbean and the Americas. This strategy is expected to attract international sporting events and conferences, contributing to economic growth and positioning Turks and Caicos as a premier sports destination.

Easy air access and idyllic facilities make the country an attractive option for a variety of sporting activities. The goal is to optimize these resources to attract tourists and sporting events that will boost the local economy and strengthen Turks and Caicos’ presence on the global sporting stage.

APPRECIATION FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE CARIBBEAN GAMES

CANOC also expressed its gratitude to Minister Taylor and the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands for their continued support of the country’s Commonwealth Games Association. This support was instrumental in organizing important meetings such as the CANOC Annual Workshop and General Assembly, as well as the historic Caribbean Sports Awards Inaugural Gala.

These events reinforce the cooperation between the Turks and Caicos Islands and the international sports community, showcasing the nation’s commitment to sports development and its growing role as host of major international competitions and conferences.
