Paris 2024 will mark a milestone in the history of the Olympic Games before it begins. Beyond the records, results, spectacular events and performances of the athletes, this summer’s event will be unique because its opening – July 26 – will not take place in an Olympic stadium, but in the water of the Seine River.
One hundred years have passed since the other Olympic event that Paris has organized and, among things, what will be very different is where Paris 2024 will kick off. The Seine will be the protagonist and the streets of the athletics track will be will change to water thanks to 180 boats that will ‘flood’ the Parisian river.

The route will go from the Austerlitz Bridge and will conclude in front of the Trocadero, next to the Eiffel Tower, where the formal events will take place. An iconic moment with one of the most symbolic buildings in the world. “The parade will take place on boats dedicated to the national delegations, equipped with cameras to allow spectators to be as close as possible to the 10,500 athletes. Sailing from east to west through Paris,” the organizing committee indicates.
The inauguration on July 26, 2024 promises to be an adventure that will integrate dancers, holograms over the water and aerial shows. The show can be witnessed by around 600,000 people in person, between free access stands and reserved places.
