Hochfilzen and Oslo-Holmenkollen have been confirmed as the hosts of the IBU Biathlon World Championships in 2028 and 2029, respectively. This decision was announced during the IBU Congress, where both locations were recognized for their impeccable facilities and long-standing tradition in biathlon. Hochfilzen, in Austria, will host the event for the fifth time. Meanwhile, the iconic Oslo-Holmenkollen, in Norway, will host the World Championships in 2029, solidifying its status as one of the sport’s most emblematic locations.

IBU President Olle Dahlin emphasized the importance of both venues and praised their role in the development of biathlon on a global scale. Hochfilzen, which was recently renovated, has been a key stop on the World Cup circuit and will offer a top-tier competition environment in 2028. Meanwhile, Oslo-Holmenkollen, traditionally the season’s closing venue, with its rich history, promises an unforgettable experience for both fans and athletes in 2029.

In addition to these championships, the IBU Congress also approved the “Target 2030” strategic plan, which sets new goals to strengthen the sport in the coming years. This plan follows the success of “Target 26,” which was implemented ahead of schedule and laid the groundwork for a strong future. Collaboration with National Federations and other stakeholders has been key to developing this strategy.

The selection of Hochfilzen and Oslo-Holmenkollen as hosts reflects the global interest in staging biathlon events and ensures that the World Championships will take place in elite settings. With these two iconic locations, biathlon will continue to attract thousands of fans and solidify its position as one of the most exciting winter sports.
