The next Olympic Games will be held in Los Angeles in 2028 and will incorporate five new disciplines, some returning after Paris 2024 and some brand new. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced these new disciplines and explained that they are in line with American sporting culture and will showcase iconic local sports to the world, while bringing more international sports to the United States.
In Paris 2024 we have seen new disciplines such as break dancing and kayak cross. Baseball and softball were present in Tokyo but not in Paris. For 2028, spectators of the world’s greatest sporting spectacle will see the return of four historic disciplines that had been forgotten; baseball, cricket and lacrosse. Two other disciplines have Olympic status for the first time, flag football and squash.
Cricket has not been an Olympic sport since the Paris Games in 1900 and lacrosse since London. Now they are being revived in a six-team tournament to be played during the Games, most likely in New York as it hosted this year’s t20 World Cup.
Flag football is a form of American football, in which instead of hitting the opponent and tackling him to the ground to finish the play, the player must remove a flag from the opponent’s waist.
