The NFL has approved Resolution MC-1 and G-4 of 2025, which establishes rules for the participation of contract players in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where flag football will be an official discipline. This measure seeks to support the growth of flag football both domestically and internationally, in addition to furthering the League’s interests, such as increasing fan interest and expanding the NFL’s global reach.

The resolution also includes specific provisions to ensure player safety and minimize conflicts with NFL commitments during the season.

Rules for NFL Players to be Olympians

Under the resolution, players under contract with the NFL will be allowed to try out for flag football teams participating in the 2028 Olympic Games. However, a limit of one player per NFL team has been established for each Olympic team, in addition to allowing international players designated by each club to represent their countries.

These rules seek to balance player participation in the Olympics with their NFL commitments, ensuring that the League’s teams are not significantly impacted.

Injury protection and medical standards

The resolution includes measures to protect NFL players participating in Olympic flag football. This includes the implementation of League-wide insurance policies to cover potential injuries during Olympic-related activities. In addition, Olympic teams will be required to meet minimum standards for medical personnel and field conditions for NFL players to participate.

These provisions seek to ensure player safety and minimize the risks associated with their participation in the event.

Compatibility with NFL commitments

Another key aspect of the resolution is the scheduling of Olympic flag football-related games and events. The NFL has established that these must not conflict in any significant way with players’ commitments to the League and their respective clubs.
