The 2025 World Judo Championships, organized by the International Judo Federation –IJF-, officially began on Saturday with an opening ceremony at the Papp László Arena in Budapest. The event, which ends on Friday and brings together the world’s best judokas, stood out in that opening speech for its message of friendship, unity, and peace, values that judo promotes globally. This is both necessary and important given the current geopolitical situation on the planet.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures such as IJF President Marius Vizer, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, and IJF Vice President and President of the Hungarian Judo Association Dr. László Tóth. International figures such as Duma Gideon Boko, President of Botswana, and Princess Tomohito of Mikasa, IJF Ambassador, also attended.
A historic event for Hungary
During his speech, Dr. László Tóth thanked the Hungarian government and sponsors for making it possible for Hungary to host this prestigious championship for the third time. “Thanks to this cooperation between Hungary and the IJF, our country is recognized throughout the world.” He also highlighted the importance of judo as a sport that combines strength, discipline, and respect.
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok underscored the country’s commitment to sport and its ability to organize high-level international events. “We have proven to be a reliable partner in athletics, canoeing, fencing, and wrestling competitions, among others.” He also noted that Budapest is home to the IJF headquarters, which reinforces the special bond between Hungary and judo.
A message of peace from the tatami
IJF President Marius Vizer closed the speeches with a message focused on the values of judo and their relevance in the current international context. “This championship is dedicated to unity, friendship, and peace, values that also represent the Hungarian people.” He also thanked the spectators for filling the arena and supporting the event.
