These are FIBA’s strategic priorities for its first meeting of 2025

The FIBA Executive Committee met at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball for its first meeting of the year, addressing a full agenda that included reports on competitions, future events, and strategic priorities.

CONTINENTAL QUALIFIERS AND CUPS 2025

The Executive Committee received detailed reports on the completion of the FIBA Continental Cup 2025 Qualifiers, including AfroBasket, AmeriCup, Asia Cup, and EuroBasket. The games attracted thousands of fans, with over 11,000 spectators in Shenzhen for the China vs. Japan match and in Riga for the Latvia vs. Spain game.

Additionally, preparations for the 2025 Continental Cups, both men’s and women’s, were presented. The women’s competitions will take place in June and July in cities such as Brno, Santiago, Shenzhen, and Abidjan, while the men’s tournaments will be held between August and September in cities like Jeddah, Luanda, Managua, and Riga.

BASKETBALL WORLD CUPS: 2026 AND 2027

The Executive Committee reviewed progress on the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, set to take place in Doha, Qatar. The qualifiers will begin in November 2025, with 80 teams competing across six windows over 18 months. Preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, Germany, were also discussed, with a new schedule approved to maximize attendance and event exposure.

The bidding process for the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments was approved, with the final decision on host cities expected by October 2025.

PRIORITIES AND BASKETBALL DEVELOPMENT

FIBA presented an executive summary of its three strategic priorities:

  • Empowering National Federations: In 2024, 112 federations received support through FIBA Plus activities.
  • Women in Basketball: The “Her World, Her Rules” program supported 85 countries in 2024 and opened its new funding round for 2025.
  • International Club Competitions: Progress was highlighted in leagues such as the Basketball Champions League, BCL Americas, and WASL, as well as the launch of women’s leagues in four regions.

THE GROWTH OF 3X3 AND OTHER KEY TOPICS

The Executive Committee received a report on 3×3 achievements in 2024, including record-breaking digital engagement and events such as the World Tour and Women’s Series. Preparations for the 2025 Champions Cup in Thailand and the 3×3 World Cup in Mongolia are underway.

On national matters, an agreement between the Brazilian Basketball Confederation and the Men’s National League was approved, marking significant progress for basketball development in Brazil. Additionally, the success of the Japan Task Force, which concluded its 10-year mission (2014-2024), was acknowledged, with major advancements in the Japan Basketball Association and the B League.

RUSSIA AND BELARUS

The status of Russia and Belarus will remain unchanged until the next FIBA Central Board meeting in May 2025.
