The world of football, led by FIFA, believes the time has come to take a stand and actively fight against racism. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced that the world’s largest football organization will present five pillars at its congress to structure the fight against racism.
The first pillar involves distinguishing racism from other offenses in football stadiums and imposing specific and rigorous sanctions for all racist acts, including automatic match forfeiture.
The second pillar calls for the temporary or permanent interruption and suspension of matches whenever incidents of racism occur. A universal signaling gesture will be introduced, allowing players to communicate racist incidents and referees to initiate the appropriate procedures.
This pillar aims to ensure that racism is considered a criminal offense in all countries. In those where it is already a crime, FIFA will advocate for strict enforcement and prosecution.
The fourth pillar focuses on educating children through pedagogical initiatives in collaboration with governments. The fifth pillar seeks to unite the entire football world by creating a Players’ Panel Against Racism. This panel, composed of retired footballers, will provide advice on actions to be taken globally.
