At the Olympic House, IOC President Thomas Bach met with IOC member Mustafa Berraf, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), and Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, President of the Association of African Olympic Sports Confederations (CASOL). During the meeting, the IOC President was briefed on the recent creation of CASOL and the joint objective of ANOCA and CASOL to further the development of sport in Africa.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the future of the African Games and its role as a key platform for sporting growth on the continent. Also discussed was the importance of facilitating the qualification of African athletes to the Olympic Games, with special attention to those from smaller National Olympic Committees.

STRENGTHENING THE AFRICAN GAMES

Both ANOCA and CASOL underlined their commitment to consolidate the African Games as a strategic event to provide more opportunities for Olympic qualification. President Bach assured his support for these initiatives, stressing the importance of integrating competitions that allow African athletes to measure themselves at the highest level.

Strengthening the African Games will not only promote sporting talent in the region, but will also help foster greater equality of opportunity for athletes across the continent, especially in nations with fewer sporting resources.

SUPPORTING SMALL AFRICAN NOCS

Another priority item on the agenda was the need to support smaller African NOCs, ensuring that their athletes have an equal opportunity to reach Olympic level. The IOC reaffirmed its commitment to equitable sports development and the growth of sport in Africa, a continent full of potential.

With the IOC’s backing, ANOCA and CASOL are moving towards a future where the African Games and Olympic qualification programs are more inclusive and accessible, reflecting the diversity and talent of African sport on the global stage.
