World Triathlon and HYROX have officially announced a strategic partnership that recognizes Hybrid Racing as a discipline within the international triathlon and multisport federation’s structure. The agreement establishes a framework for organizing official competitions at different levels and marks a new step in the expansion of a sport that combines running with functional fitness exercises, with the ambition of securing a place at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The partnership, the result of a year of joint work, also defines the responsibilities of both organizations in developing the discipline. HYROX will have exclusive responsibility for organizing the official World, Continental and National Championships for elite athletes competing in the Ultimate format, while World Triathlon’s national federations will be able to promote competitions across different formats, including events for age-group athletes. In this way, the partnership aims to establish a competitive structure that connects amateur participation with elite performance.

Hybrid Racing: three formats to expand competition

The agreement includes three official Hybrid Racing formats designed to accommodate different levels of intensity and sporting objectives. The first is Ultimate, which maintains the competition format currently used by HYROX. Fast offers a shorter, more intense version, while Ultra extends the challenge and focuses on endurance. All three formats will be sanctioned and regulated by World Triathlon, with rules jointly developed by both organizations to establish a common competitive framework.

This standardization aims to facilitate the discipline’s international growth and provide consistent competition conditions across different countries. National federations will play a key role in expanding the sport beyond HYROX-organized events, as they will be able to develop competitions in all three formats and organize national championships for age-group athletes. With a network of more than 177 member federations, World Triathlon aims to leverage its international reach to create new participation opportunities and strengthen multisport development from grassroots to elite level.

Hybrid Racing’s path towards the Olympic and Paralympic Games

One of the partnership’s main objectives is to work towards including Hybrid Racing in Multisport Games, with the ultimate ambition of securing its inclusion in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany highlighted that the agreement would accelerate the organization’s international growth and create new opportunities for its national federations. From both organizations’ perspective, establishing an official competition structure represents a necessary step towards consolidating the discipline within organized sport.

Christian Toetzke, HYROX co-founder and CEO, said the partnership represents progress towards the vision of building a standardized global sport with Olympic ambitions. Meanwhile, Moritz Fürste, the organization’s co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer, emphasized the role of the athlete community in the discipline’s growth, which has expanded from its first competitions in Germany to attract participants across six continents. Following the announcement, both organizations will work towards a definitive agreement detailing the operational, governance and commercial aspects of the partnership, while developing the conditions needed to expand Hybrid Racing’s presence on the international sporting calendar.
