On January 30, 2025, World Triathlon announced the implementation of new regulations regarding the eligibility of transgender athletes, revising the previous rules from August 2022. These modifications aim to promote inclusion and fairness in the sport by establishing a new open category for age groups, replacing the existing male category. This category will allow transgender athletes, both men and women, to compete without the need to meet medical or legal criteria.
World Triathlon has emphasized that these policies are a “living document” and are subject to review as scientific research in the field progresses. The organization is committed to monitoring compliance and adapting the regulations as necessary to ensure fair and inclusive competition for all athletes.
NEW REGULATIONS
The new regulations also apply to Para Triathlon, where transgender women must compete in the male category during the first three years of the eligibility process. All athletes must comply with anti-doping regulations while competing in any category. Athlete medical information and data will be handled with strict confidentiality to ensure respect for their privacy.
These new regulations also maintain a four-year eligibility period for transgender women who wish to compete in the elite female category. During this time, they will be required to maintain testosterone levels below 2.5 nmol/L and participate in academic research. Additionally, they must compete in a minimum number of races in the open category during the first three years before gaining full eligibility rights. On the other hand, transgender men will be able to compete in the elite male category simply by submitting a signed declaration of their male identity, with no additional testosterone-related requirements.
