World Triathlon maintains its commitment to supporting the development of young triathletes and emerging federations globally. At the recent XXXVII World Triathlon Congress held in late October in Torremolinos, Spain, the 2024 World Triathlon Championship Finals were presented, and updates on educational and developmental projects were shared, marking six years of continuous growth since the establishment of the National Federation Services & Development Department in 2018. This congress also provided a comprehensive overview of the Paris Olympic Cycle (2021-2024) and introduced the new Development Regional Cup concept.

One key highlight of the event was celebrating the 10th anniversary of the TRI Education & Knowledge Hub, a fundamental training resource for the development of triathletes and coaches. World Triathlon expressed gratitude for the active participation of National Federation representatives, who provided valuable insights and feedback on enhancing services, strengthening communication, and expanding educational outreach. The initiatives discussed in this forum aim to support athletes from developing federations, with the goal of helping them compete at the World Triathlon Cup level and qualify for future Olympic Games.

YOUTH AND UPCOMING OLYMPIC CYCLES

The flagship project, Team World Triathlon, focuses on athletes born after 1998, emphasizing their long-term preparation for Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032. To join this team, athletes must meet certain performance criteria, including notable results in continental competitions, be part of developing federations, and maintain good standing with their national federations. The strategy is based on providing support at specific stages of their competitive growth, from junior to elite levels, fostering a gradual transition to the Olympic level.

Team World Triathlon not only provides resources for athletic preparation but also on-site services at competitions. This includes full-board accommodation, travel stipends, access to massages, physiotherapy, and bicycle mechanic assistance. Additionally, training facilities and support from a team manager ensure athletes are well-prepared before events. This comprehensive support is essential for enabling participation in World Cup tournaments and other high-level international competitions.

WORLD TRIATHLON’S GOAL: LOS ANGELES 2028

Team World Triathlon also establishes clear pathways to Olympic qualification, including Olympic rankings, world rankings, and universal places from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), among other opportunities. The qualification process for Los Angeles 2028 will officially start in 2026, focusing on supporting athletes with the highest potential to secure their spot in the Games. Through these opportunities, World Triathlon seeks to create pathways for a diverse group of athletes from around the world, promoting gender equality and equitable development opportunities.

World Triathlon collaborates with the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity program to provide scholarships and educational opportunities that enhance triathletes’ preparation. These scholarships offer financial support for training and competition expenses, especially for those from developing nations. Additionally, the TRI Education & Knowledge Hub continues to play a central role in the training of athletes, coaches, and federations, helping build a more inclusive future for triathlon at all levels.

2025-2028 PLAN: SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT AND TALENT MONITORING

In the 2025-2028 cycle, Team World Triathlon will evaluate and support athletes based on their performance, financial sustainability, and geographical location, prioritizing those who demonstrate the greatest potential to qualify for the Olympic Games. In the first two years, progress will be monitored through World Cups and other high-level competitions. In the third and fourth years, the project will focus efforts on athletes who qualify and those who represent a solid option for the future of global triathlon.

Through support and development initiatives like Team World Triathlon, the organization not only aims to excel in the Olympic realm but also to establish itself as a leader in promoting an inclusive and accessible sport. The conclusions of the recent World Congress in Torremolinos underscore World Triathlon’s commitment to continuous evolution and expansion across all nations, reinforcing a fundamental mission to strengthen the sport for both present and future generations.
