The harmony between sport, culture, and diplomacy became tangible in Guangzhou, where the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, was received by President Xi Jinping to attend the opening ceremony of China’s National Games. The meeting, marked by mutual respect and a shared vision of promoting sport as a bridge between nations, inaugurated a day that celebrated diversity and the talent of thousands of athletes in a dazzling display of light, art, and technology.

In the heart of southern China, the leading representative of the Olympic Movement highlighted the magnitude of the event, which brings together more than 25,000 participants, both professional and recreational athletes, as a reflection of the unifying power of sport. Coventry emphasized China’s role as a global powerhouse in sports and praised the country’s ability to inspire younger generations through physical education and active participation, key pillars for the future of Olympism.

A meeting to strengthen Olympic cooperation

Before the ceremony, the IOC President held a meeting with Xi Jinping in which she reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining a strong and lasting partnership with the host nation. Coventry underscored the significance of the alliance that began with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and was reinforced during the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, expressing her desire to continue promoting the values of Olympism around the world. “China has been an essential ally for the IOC. I deeply value its support and forward-looking vision regarding sport and youth,” she stated.

The dialogue between the two leaders also served to emphasize the importance of preserving the neutrality of sport and its independence from any political influence. Xi Jinping, for his part, reiterated his country’s commitment to the Olympic spirit and international cooperation, reflecting a shared vision centered on promoting understanding and peace through sport.

Strategic alliances and new international prospects

During her stay in Guangzhou, Coventry took part in a series of meetings that reinforced the global expansion of the Olympic Movement. One of the milestones was the signing of the final agreement between the IOC and China Media Group (CMG), securing broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games through 2032. This agreement, based on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2023, consolidates a long-term partnership that drives technological innovation in sports coverage, with 8K broadcasts and the participation of more than 500 professionals in the upcoming Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

The IOC President also met with representatives of the Xinhua News Agency and with global Olympic partners TCL, Mengniu, and Alibaba, reinforcing the IOC’s commitment to sustainable development and the worldwide promotion of Olympic values. These meetings reflect a shared effort to strengthen the connection between sport, media, and technology, ensuring that the message of Olympism reaches new audiences and generations across the world.
