Alonzo Mourning has already won his best game. The former American basketball player confirmed that he has defeated prostate cancer after an operation he underwent in March. He lived to tell it and to also spread his message to the men of the world: prevent before regret. The NBA champion with Miami in 2006 and his powerful message in favor of health.
At 54 years old, Mourning can say that he is cancer-free, after the operation in which his prostate was removed. The success of the intervention opened a new door to life after overcoming an illness that, if not detected in time, could lead to death. “What scares me about this disease is that there are a lot of men walking around, feeling good, and they have this cancer inside them without knowing it,” the seven-time NBA All-Star told ESPN.
It is not the first time that Mourning had to undergo some intervention for health reasons. In 2002 he suffered a kidney problem and had to have his kidney removed. However, the American still had a prosperous career. Of course, by that year his best times had already passed since his debut in 1992 with the Hornets and after his first stage in Miami. Good seasons for the center, which led him to be part of the FIBA Hall of Fame, but he still had more time on the court until his retirement in 2009 at the age of 38.
And given the experience, Alonzo decided to be a spokesperson and call on men to have medical checkups. “We live in a world where it is taboo among men to talk about health problems. If I hadn’t had routine checkups, I probably wouldn’t be here to talk about this. I want men to be proactive with their health,” said the American.
“Unfortunately, as men, we don’t like going to the doctor, but this is the only way to know what is going on in your body. Prostate cancer, and even colon cancer, are silent killers, and many men will not receive those diagnoses until it is too late,” concluded the also Olympic champion in Sydney 2000 and world champion with his country in 1994.
