The road to the Beijing 2027 World Athletics Championships has already begun to take shape after the Council of World Athletics officially approved the qualification system and entry standards for the upcoming global event. The governing body of world athletics will maintain a model that combines entry standards and world rankings, seeking to balance athletes’ access through individual performance and consistent competitiveness throughout the qualification period.
The decision also reflects the evolution athletics has experienced in recent years. The growth in competitive standards across multiple disciplines, together with advances in physical preparation, technology, and performance analysis, has made it necessary to adjust the championship entry criteria. Under this new framework, approximately 40% of athletes are expected to qualify through direct entry standards, while the remaining 60% will gain access through the world rankings, further establishing the ranking system as a key tool within the international competitive structure.
A model that rewards consistency and global competitiveness
The system approved by World Athletics includes four main qualification pathways for individual events: achieving the entry standard during the qualification period, securing a place through designated competitions, receiving a special invitation, or qualifying through world ranking position. This approach seeks to recognize not only outstanding performances at specific moments, but also an athlete’s ability to maintain a high competitive level over time.
One of the most significant changes is directly related to the operation of the world rankings. The federation decided to place greater emphasis on performance scores while reducing the influence of finishing positions in certain competitions. The measure aims to create more balanced opportunities for athletes from different regions of the world, especially for those with more limited access to high-level international events. In this way, the system aims to better reflect each athlete’s true level and become less dependent on the competitive calendar available in each country.
Schedules, standards, and new opportunities on the road to Beijing 2027
Qualification periods have been defined differently depending on each discipline. In the case of the marathon, the process began on November 3, 2025, and will run until May 2, 2027. For the 10,000 meters, race walking, combined events, and relays, the window will extend from February 2026 until August 2027, while all other disciplines will allow qualifying marks from August 2026 through August 2027. In addition, marks must primarily be achieved in Category C competitions or higher, ensuring minimum standards of competitive quality.
The new system also includes additional qualification mechanisms that broaden opportunities for different types of athletes and federations. Regional champions will be able to qualify directly in certain events, while winners of competitions such as the Wanda Diamond League, the World Race Walking Tour, and selected Label marathons will receive special invitations. At the same time, World Athletics will launch the “Road to Beijing 27” tool, a platform that will allow athletes, federations, media, and fans to follow the qualification status of every discipline in real time, providing greater transparency and monitoring throughout the process.
