The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee -LA28- has confirmed new start and finish locations for several road events in the Olympic and Paralympic programme, as well as the Main Press Center -MPC- for the Paralympic Games. The announcement covers Olympic road cycling, Para cycling road, the Para athletics Paralympic Marathon and locations including Venice Beach Boardwalk, Griffith Observatory, LA Zoo, LA Memorial Coliseum and Hollywood Park.
The update gives a clearer sense of how LA28 is building a highly recognisable competition map for endurance events. The routes will connect the Pacific coastline, the green setting of Griffith Park, views over Los Angeles and the sporting symbolism of LA Memorial Coliseum. The city will not simply serve as a backdrop to competition, but as a visible part of the Games’ visual identity.
Griffith Observatory, an Olympic finish for road cycling
The Olympic Cycling Road Road Race events will take place on 22 and 23 July 2028. The start will be at Venice Beach Boardwalk, in the Venice Zone, as previously confirmed, while the finish will be at Griffith Observatory, in the Griffith Park Zone. The full route will be announced later, but the plan already points to a race that will take riders from the Los Angeles coastline to an elevated finish at one of the city’s best-known viewpoints.
The Olympic road cycling time trial, scheduled for 19 July 2028, will start at LA Zoo and also finish at Griffith Observatory. Choosing the observatory as the finish for both Olympic road cycling events introduces an iconic and potentially demanding ending, located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood and overlooking the Los Angeles Basin. Rather than opting for a more neutral or purely urban finish, LA28 is placing the event at a location with strong visual identity and international recognition.
Venice Beach and the Coliseum for the Paralympic Marathon
The Paralympic Marathon in Para Athletics will take place on 27 August 2028, the final day of the Paralympic Games, starting at Venice Beach Boardwalk and finishing in front of LA Memorial Coliseum, in the Exposition Park Zone. The course will therefore connect two very different images of Los Angeles: the Pacific coastline and a historic stadium linked to the Olympic Games of 1932 and 1984.
The Para Cycling Road events —Road Race, Time Trial and Mixed Team Relay— will be held from 22 to 26 August 2028, starting and finishing at LA Zoo, within Griffith Park. This design concentrates Para cycling in a recognisable green area of the city’s urban map, also connected to other key points in the Olympic and Paralympic plan. LA Zoo and Griffith Park will therefore operate as one of the main hubs for cycling-related road events.
A shared press centre for the Olympic and Paralympic Games
LA28 also confirmed that the headquarters of the National Football League -NFL- at Hollywood Park, in the Inglewood Zone, will serve as the Main Press Center for the 2028 Paralympic Games. The same venue had already been announced as the MPC for the Olympic Games, adding an important organisational element: a shared infrastructure for media coverage of both events, designed as an operational hub for thousands of accredited professionals.
The organising committee will unveil the full routes for all road events later this year, including the Olympic Marathon, Race Walk, Paralympic Marathon, road cycling, Para cycling, triathlon and Para triathlon. The LA28 Olympic Games will take place from 14 to 30 July 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games from 15 to 27 August, featuring around 4,480 Paralympic athletes, 560 medal events and 23 sports.
