The Executive Committee meeting of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) held in Taranto this past weekend reaffirmed its role within the global Olympic movement. ICMJE President Davide Tizzano highlighted the growing importance of the Mediterranean Games as a platform for unity, cultural exchange and sporting excellence.
During the meeting, Secretary General Iakovos Filippousis presented the ICMJE Activity Report, highlighting the organization’s continued growth since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Notable achievements include the implementation of a commercial rights and corporate branding strategy, the complete digitization of operations and the growing interest in organizing the Mediterranean Beach Games.
ALICANTE FOR THE 2031 BEACH GAMES
One of the highlights was the presentation of Alicante’s bid to host the 2031 Mediterranean Beach Games. Raquel Hernández Carbonell, representing the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Alicante City Council, presented a detailed proposal that received a positive evaluation from the Executive Committee.
Although Alicante is the only candidate city, the final decision will be taken at the ICMJE General Assembly in 2025. Prior to that, the 2031 Beach Games Evaluation Commission will visit the city in the spring of that same year to issue a report that will be key in the election.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND OLYMPIC SUCCESS
The Executive Committee unanimously approved the 2023 Financial Report, audited by I&G Audit, which certified a significant surplus for the fifth consecutive year. This result reflects the sound financial management of the ICJM, details of which will be presented at the 2025 General Assembly.
The performance of the National Olympic Committees of the Mediterranean countries at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was also a source of pride. According to Stratos Karetos, the region experienced a notable increase in the number of medals and athletes participating, consolidating its relevance in the global sports scene.
The presidents of the Coordination Commissions of the next Mediterranean Games presented reports detailing the progress and challenges in the preparations. In addition, strategic initiatives designed to enhance the development of sport in the Mediterranean basin were approved.
