July 22, 1993, marks the birthday of Navid Afkari, the wrestler from Shiraz who earned the title of champion due to his steadfast resistance in the prisons of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Association of Freedom-Loving Athletes of Iran has designated his birthday as “Champion’s Day.” On this day, many Iranians worldwide hold ceremonies to honor Navid Afkari’s memory.
In a recorded message, Afkari stated, “From now on, my family and I need help. My message is not just for Iran; it is for anyone who speaks of humanity and possesses a shred of integrity. Your silence means supporting oppression and the oppressor, endorsing the execution of an innocent person, and bringing me step by step closer to the gallows.”
In another part of the same recording, he emphasized that after being freed from torture, confinement, and solitary detention, he lodged a complaint with the relevant judicial authorities, asserting his innocence and declaring that he was not a murderer.
Afkari deeply loved his mother and dreamt of presenting her with a world wrestling championship medal. His execution was carried out on September 12, 2020, with unusual speed and without prior notice to his family. That same evening, he was buried under strict security measures.
The Association of Freedom-Loving Athletes of Iran extends congratulations on the birthday of this freedom-loving champion to the Afkari family and the Iranian sports community. They stress that the national revolution of Iran, achieved through the sacrifices of individuals like Navid, will soon come to fruition, leading to the liberation of the country.
