The controversial UFC fighter Conor McGregor took an unexpected step into politics on Monday by launching a petition on the platform change.org, seeking public support for his bid to run in Ireland’s presidential election, scheduled for November 11.

The former featherweight and welterweight champion, who has not fought since 2021, shared the petition link on his X account, accompanied by a message urging Irish citizens to back his candidacy. At 37, McGregor had already signaled in March his intention to enter the political arena. However, the Irish Constitution requires that any presidential hopeful secure the backing of 20 members of parliament or four county councils in order to appear on the ballot.

A criticism of the system and the prime minister

“This system, while designed to ensure some degree of political influence among candidates, unintentionally restricts the direct voice of the Irish electorate,” McGregor wrote. “In this context, I am launching a petition to request a change in the nomination process so that my name may appear on the ballot. I argue that the Irish people must have the absolute right to decide which candidates should appear on the presidential ballot. Therefore, I urge you to join me in this effort by signing this petition.”

Before adding a direct call to action —“Sign my petition to save Ireland!”— the Dubliner also used the opportunity to deliver a scathing attack on current Prime Minister Simon Harris, calling him “disgraceful.” He further urged voters to back “any candidate other than these traitors, these inhumane individuals.”

Within just a few hours, the petition had surpassed 5,000 signatures, but McGregor will need far more support to push for a change in the nomination rules. His move has once again placed him at the center of public debate, far from the octagon, but true to his combative style — this time, in the political arena.
