In a move that reshapes the landscape of sports media in the United States, ESPN announced the acquisition of NFL Network and the linear rights to the RedZone channel, as part of a strategic agreement with the NFL. Additionally, the deal grants the league a 10% stake in the sports network owned by The Walt Disney Company. This alliance aims to strengthen both the digital and television offerings for American football fans.

The agreement also includes the integration of the NFL’s fantasy product into ESPN’s existing platform, making ESPN Fantasy Football the league’s official fantasy game. Also included is the licensing of other content and intellectual property from the NFL, which will be featured on NFL Network and other ESPN assets. The sports network will now be responsible for operating NFL Network, both in its linear and digital formats, with distribution spanning traditional pay TV and ESPN’s upcoming direct-to-consumer service.

A partnership reshaping the sports and streaming ecosystem

Through this acquisition, ESPN will integrate NFL Network into its forthcoming streaming service — set to launch in early fall at $29.99 per month — featuring all seven national ESPN networks, ESPN on ABC, and exclusive content. This move reinforces Disney’s commitment to a more robust digital sports entertainment ecosystem, offering a more accessible and innovative experience for fans. ESPN will also acquire full rights to RedZone, including its trademark, while the NFL retains production and digital distribution rights.

In addition to operational control of NFL Network, ESPN will license three additional games per season, bringing its total to 28. NFL Network will continue broadcasting seven games per year, with some games shifting from ESPN’s original programming to the network. Despite these changes, the NFL will retain control of key media assets such as NFL Films and NFL.com, as executives from both organizations emphasize that this alliance will bring football to new audiences through innovative formats and a more immersive experience.
