The Piedmont region of Italy is gearing up to host one of the most anticipated events in university sports: the FISU World University Games Turin 2025. With less than 30 days to go before the opening on January 13, the Italian city is ready to write a new chapter in academic sports history, blending tradition and innovation as the Games return to Turin after 18 years.
With over 2,000 athletes from 57 countries competing in 11 sports disciplines, this edition promises to be a spectacular event. For the first time in history, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing competitions for para-athletes will be included, highlighting the International University Sports Federation’s (FISU) commitment to inclusivity. In addition to the sports competitions, cultural and educational activities will also take place, emphasizing the holistic nature of the event.
A VIBANT REGION OF SPORT AND CULTURE
Over the course of 11 competition days, Turin and five municipalities across Piedmont will host events in iconic venues. The capital city will stage sports such as curling, figure skating, ice hockey, and short track speed skating, with notable facilities including the Palavela and PalaTazzoli arenas. In the mountains, Bardonecchia will host alpine skiing, snowboarding, and freestyle skiing; Pragelato will feature biathlon, cross-country skiing, and ski orienteering; while Sestriere will serve as the venue for thrilling ski mountaineering events.
Ice hockey, considered the fastest team sport, will take place in Torre Pellice, Pinerolo, and Turin. This sport, a program staple since 1962, has included women’s competitions since 2009 and is set to be one of the event’s main attractions.
INNOVATION AND TRADITION: MORE THAN JUST SPORTS
Beyond the competitions, the program will feature BRAINstorm, an international intellectual challenge organized in collaboration with local universities, showcasing the creative and academic spirit of the FISU Games. Meanwhile, the iconic torch of the Games, known as “Guarini,” is touring the host cities, spreading the excitement and anticipation of this global celebration of university sports.
Tickets for the competitions and key events, such as the Figure Skating Gala on January 19, are now available on the official platform. Cultural activities designed to enrich the overall experience will make this edition unforgettable, underscoring the Games’ commitment to cultural integration, innovation, and sporting talent.
