The FIRST Global Challenge 2024 concluded in Athens on September 29, 2024, after four days of competition, collaboration, and cultural exchange. Under the theme “Feeding the Future,” this event brought together students from 193 nations to address global food security through robotics and technology. Organized by FIRST Global and sponsored primarily by Lam Research, the challenge promoted the creation of a more sustainable food system, empowering the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
This year, participants worked on a robotics competition focused on sustainable food systems. More than 20 awards were given to outstanding teams not only for their technological innovations but also for their commitment to STEM education and international collaboration. Among the highlights was the awarding of gold medals in the Winning Alliance to teams from the People’s Republic of China, Moldova, Madagascar, and the Cook Islands, who expressed their pride and gratitude after receiving recognition.

One of the most significant awards, the Albert Einstein Award for Global Excellence, was given to Mexico, which took home the gold medal. A participant from the Mexican team commented, “Winning this award means a lot to us. We have been working on this nonstop for three months, and it’s incredible.” This spirit of dedication and effort resonated among all winners, who shared their excitement for having contributed to the cause of global food security.
Innovation was also a central aspect of the event. The Spanish team received the Innovation Award for their approach to food production and solar energy. Their project proposes a solution to recover agricultural land converted into solar facilities, allowing for food cultivation on previously unproductive soil. This idea not only aims to improve sustainability but also offers a replicable model for other countries, highlighting the positive impact of robotics on agriculture.
Beyond technical competitions, the FIRST Global Challenge 2024 also celebrated cultural diversity. Activities included a vibrant Nations Parade and a Cultural Celebration at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, where teams shared their unique traditions. Additionally, the visit of dignitaries, such as the Prime Minister of Greece, underscored the event’s importance. Ultimately, the Global Challenge not only enhanced the technical skills of young participants but also fostered camaraderie and unity among nations, leaving a lasting legacy in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
