Kambiz Atabay, former President of the Asian Football Confederation and a key figure in the development of football in Iran, has died at the age of 86.

Atabay led the Iranian Football Federation from 1972 to 1978, overseeing a transformative period in which the sport gained its modern structure. He established the Takht Jamshid League in 1973, Iran’s first professional national competition, improving club organisation and raising the profile of domestic football.

Under his leadership, the national team became a dominant force in Asia, winning the Asian Cup, securing gold at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran, and qualifying for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, Iran’s first appearance at the tournament. He also promoted youth development and coaching education, creating a pipeline for future talent.

In 1976, Atabay was elected President of the AFC, becoming the first Iranian to hold the post. He focused on strengthening governance across Asia, fostering closer ties with FIFA, and enhancing the competitiveness of Asian football on the global stage.

Following the 1979 revolution in Iran, Atabay left the country and later led the New York office of Her Majesty Empress Farah Pahlavi. He remained active in cultural and diplomatic affairs while stepping back from sport.

Empress Farah Pahlavi

Empress Farah Pahlavi expressed her deep sorrow at his passing, stating that Atabay was not only a senior official who served Iran with dedication, including as head of her office abroad, but also a close and loyal friend.

She highlighted his long career of distinguished service, from his roles as aide to the Shah, Director General of Technical and Public Services at the Imperial Court, Secretary General of the Royal Horse Association, President of the Iranian Equestrian Federation, President of the Iranian Football Federation, to President of the AFC, a period considered one of the proudest in Iranian football history. She remembered him as a steadfast companion during the Shah’s final travels, and as a person who, for decades, managed her office with diligence, warmth, and integrity.

Kambiz Atabay is remembered as a reformer whose vision and leadership shaped Iranian football and contributed to the rise of Asia in global football. His influence endures in the structures and professional standards he established.
