The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is at a key moment in defining the future of its leadership. Through the recent publication of the presentation and voting regulations, the guidelines for electing the successor to Thomas Bach, whose term ends on June 24, 2025, are set. This process, approved by the IOC Executive Board, will be crucial during the 144th IOC Session, which will take place in Greece from March 18 to 21, 2025.
The candidate presentations are scheduled for January 30, 2025, at the Olympic House in Lausanne. This closed-door event marks the beginning of a thorough and transparent electoral process designed to ensure equal conditions for all contenders.
PRESENTATION PROCESS
Candidates will have the opportunity to present their proposals to IOC members in a private meeting. These presentations, limited to 15 minutes, must follow a uniform format. Additionally, interactions with the press will be organized in a controlled manner after the presentations.
The order of the presentations will be determined by a drawing, and during the session, only IOC members and authorized technical staff will be present, with electronic devices not permitted to preserve the confidentiality of the event.
VOTING REGULATIONS
The election of the new IOC president will be conducted through a secret electronic vote, with alternative methods available in case of technical failures. Voting will continue in successive rounds until a candidate obtains an absolute majority, with the candidate receiving the fewest votes being eliminated in each round.
The new president will be announced live after the final vote, and will begin their eight-year term starting on June 24, 2025. With this process, the IOC reaffirms its commitment to a rigorous and transparent election at a crucial time for the Olympic movement.
