In the morning of 30 January, the IOC Members will attend the presentations by the candidates for the IOC presidency. This in-camera meeting will give the IOC Members the opportunity to hear from the seven candidates about their programmes. The actual election is scheduled for the IOC Session to be held from 18 to 21 March 2025 in Greece.
In the afternoon, the IOC Members will gather for the Extraordinary IOC Session, which will be the 143 IOC Session, during which they will vote on the host of the Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2028. As announced earlier this year, the IOC entered into a Targeted Dialogue for the Winter YOG 2028 with the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and the Dolomiti Valtellina project.
HRH Prince Feisal AL HUSSEIN, Lord Sebastian COE, Mrs Kirsty COVENTRY, Mr Johan ELIASCH, Mr David LAPPARTIENT, Mr Juan Antonio SAMARANCH and Mr Morinari WATANABE, each with unique visions for the future of the Olympic movement, were the candidates officially announced their candidacies by the deadline of midnight on 15 September 2024.
The International Olympic Committee is facing a crucial stage with the upcoming election of its new president, as Thomas Bach, who has led the organization since 2013, is due to step down in 2025. With the departure of Bach, who has left a significant mark on the modernization of the IOC, candidates face a number of challenges, including the need to continue with the reforms initiated, managing the impact of climate change on sporting events and adapting the Olympic Games to a younger, digitized audience.
