It’s difficult to think of the greatest Olympian without immediately picturing Michael Phelps. The American swimmer wrapped up his Olympic career with an incredible 23 gold medals and a total of 28 medals, making him the most decorated Olympian ever.
However, Mijain Lopez, a Cuban wrestler, may be giving Phelps a run for his money as the most dominant Olympian of all time. Competing in the 130kg Greco-Roman weight class, Lopez sought to make history on Tuesday afternoon.
Already a four-time defending Olympic gold medalist, Lopez first triumphed in 2008 in Beijing and defended his title in 2012, 2016, and 2021. On Tuesday, Lopez clinched his fifth consecutive gold medal by defeating Yasmani Acosta of Chile, becoming the first Olympian to achieve five straight golds in a single individual event. This achievement solidifies his claim as arguably the greatest individual Olympian ever.
The 41-year-old Lopez is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers in history. He has accumulated a total of 33 gold medals throughout his career, competing in the World Championships, World Cup, Pan American Games, Pan American Championships, and the Olympics.
