A new era is approaching in World Triathlon, the governing body of this sport worldwide. The international federation of the discipline that involves swimming, cycling and running announced the eight candidates who will compete for its presidency, included Antonio Arimany (the current World Triathlon Secretary General) changing its name after 16 years with the Spanish Marisol Casado in the front.
“The presidential election marks a significant moment in the history of the organization, welcoming a new era of leadership,” World Triathlon published. On October 21, 2024, elections will be held at the organization’s Congress to be held in Torremolinos, Spain.
Casado will leave the presidency after having assumed it in 2008 after a life linked to sports and triathlon. She was a founding member and later both General Secretary and Vice President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation; founding member of the International Triathlon Union, which in 2021 would be renamed World Triathlon; In addition to having presided over both the European Triathlon Union and the Spanish Commission for Women and Sports, among other directive bodies. She is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee.
Who are the candidates for the presidency? World Triathlon published the list of eight names whose candidacies were approved. South African Debbie Alexander, who in 2020 was announced by Casado herself as the organization’s first vice president, heads the list. There is also the Japanese Shin Otsuka, who was previously President of Finance and Marketing and member of the Executive Committee of the World Triathlon since 2004.
On the other hand, Vice President Antonio Álvarez of Mexico also seeks to retain the presidency. The Spanish Antonio Arimany, the Australian Michelle Cooper, the Danish Mads Freund, the British Ian Howard and the Hungarian Tamas Toth complete the list.
“All eight candidatures have been officially approved by the World Triathlon Credentials Committee, ensuring that each candidate meets the strict eligibility criteria established by World Triathlon. Each candidate submitted their candidatures, which were endorsed by their respective National Federations , before the designated deadline, confirming their commitment and willingness to lead the organization,” World Triathlon reported.
