Within the framework of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, a meeting filled with symbolism brought together ANOC President Robin Mitchell and Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg with the women’s volleyball team of Afghanistan. Beyond the sporting aspect, the moment represented a gesture of recognition and support for a group of women who embody the courage and hope of thousands who today face restrictions imposed in their country.

The meeting, which also included Nawal El Moutawakel, a member of the IOC from Morocco, took place after the Afghan team’s match against Tajikistan. ANOC’s leadership congratulated the team for their effort and for the inspiring message they convey: competing not only for victory, but for the right to dream and represent all women who, despite adversity, seek a space to express themselves through sport.

The power of sport as a symbol of resistance

The words of Mahbooba Husseini, a member of the Afghan team, summarize the spirit that drives them: “Our main goal is not only to pursue our dreams and a new adventure, but also to show and represent Afghan women and to demonstrate to the world that, if we have the necessary equality, we will pursue our dreams and shine.” In every point, in every act of unity on the court, the players deliver a message that transcends the boundaries of the stadium and becomes a voice of dignity against imposed silence.

Their presence in the Islamic Solidarity Games goes beyond competition: it is an affirmation of identity and a declaration of freedom. In a context where sporting opportunities for Afghan women are scarce, their participation reflects the power of sport as a tool for visibility, empowerment, and social transformation. Their story inspires and reminds us that sometimes the greatest victory is not on the scoreboard, but in the very possibility of playing.

ANOC and ISSA: an alliance to amplify voices

The collaboration between ANOC and ISSA has allowed these Games to become a platform to highlight stories like that of Afghan women’s volleyball. Through joint initiatives, participating athletes can share their experiences and interact with followers around the world, strengthening the connection between sport and community.

This space not only celebrates competition but also the diversity and resilience of athletes who find in sport a way to express identity and hope. In Riyadh, the meeting between Olympic leaders and the Afghan team reaffirmed ANOC’s commitment to the values of equality, inclusion, and solidarity, reminding us that behind every delegation are stories that deserve to be heard and recognized.
