The President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, awarded El Hadji Amadou Dia Ba the Grand Cross of the National Order of the Lion, the country’s highest national honour, during a ceremony held on 21 December in Dakar, according to reports by the agency ‘Vibractu’.
Amadou Dia Ba remains the only Olympic medallist in the history of Senegal, after winning a silver medal in the 400 metres hurdles at the Seoul Olympic Games 1988, a result that marked an unprecedented milestone for Senegalese athletics and for national sport as a whole.
A symbol of Senegalese sport on the Olympic stage
Dia Ba’s performance in Seoul 1988, where he contested one of the most notable Olympic finals of his generation, gradually became a symbol of national pride and a point of reference for several generations of African athletes. More than three decades later, his medal remains the only one won by Senegal at an Olympic Games.
The decoration recognises not only an exceptional sporting achievement, but also a career built on consistency, discipline and commitment to representing the country in international competitions—values highlighted by the Presidency as central to the former athlete’s legacy.

Institutional recognition of an exemplary career
Through this distinction, the Head of State sought to honour an athlete who embodied the values of effort and perseverance in service of the national flag, placing Senegal on the Olympic map in a discipline of the highest technical and physical demands.
The Grand Cross of the National Order of the Lion is awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s prestige, and its presentation to Amadou Dia Ba reinforces institutional recognition of sport as a factor of cohesion, identity and international projection.
The tribute forms part of a broader commitment to preserving the nation’s sporting memory and highlighting historical figures whose contributions transcend competition and continue to exert a lasting symbolic influence on the development of Senegalese sport.
